Spring is in the Air

What a wet day!  It was pouring buckets at Mount Lebanon School today.  A good day to be a fish!
As many of you know, we raised eastern brook trout in our classroom.  Last week, however, our fourth grade learned a very important lesson about life and death.  Our trout, 200 of them, perished for an unknown reason.  Our tank was the correct temperature, water quality was good, trout were developing well, but for some reason,  they didn't make it.  We used the situation as a teachable moment.  We observed a live trout and a dead one and noticed differences in each.  We are still planning on going to the river to do a release (Hanover Street School is giving us some trout) on Thursday.  While we are there, we'll check water quality (oxygen level, ph level), food supply (we'll make sure there's enough BMI), habitat (riffle, run, and pool) and we'll talk about the importance of a  watershed with the book A River Ran Wild by Lynne Cherry.
